Though I've read this in many forms many times, I can never find it in my heart to take the advice seriously: stop checking your email. I suppose this could apply to any sort of information that is obsessively reviewed - your friend's feeds, your reader application (which is, by the way, where I was reading about this: http://www.technotheory.com/2009/02/little-bit-of-productivity-great-bit-of-happiness), and most definitely your email. Lots of folks encourage us to be smarter about staying informed - pick and choose the things you spend your time on and the people you spend your time with.
Easier said than done... though if I listened, maybe I'd have more time to read actual books?

I read something similar to this on CNN... something about an email detox thing (apparently the newest diet). I agree that this is easier said than done. Especially because I have diagnosed myself with Email OCD. Billions of adults suffer from this each year, and apparently, it has started to spread to even younger generations... We are doomed!
Although email and other communication mediums cut off face time- I still find email to be more convenient especially when you are on the go all the time. Basically- I say if they made the work days shorter we would all have time to check our emails AND call those people who left voice mails months ago, back. That way- everyone is happy!
I think you can do it, Colby--just focus on something else in the morning and let email wait. Nobody will be mad when you respond in the early afternoon...but you'll have gotten a ton of things done in the process :-). Thanks for the link.
